VIDEO: Rare sight of Yelkouan Shearwater nests located at cliffs

By means of special cameras, one can view the rare sight of the nests of the Yelkouan Shearwater, which this bird makes inside the cracks of cliffs.

The footage which is being shared thanks to the LIFE Arċipelagu Garnija project by BirdLife Malta, shows for the first time what is happening during the nesting period of this seabird.

This footage was taken directly from the nesting site by means of trail cameras, which shed new light on what happens inside the nests located on our coastal cliffs.

In a statement, BirdLife Malta said that this project, which is working for the conservation of this vulnerable and protected species, is using specially made cameras which work without a white flash or noise to cause the least amount of disruption to the birds.

The video is recording what is happening every day between two specific nests in different colonies, one at the Cliffs of Our Lady and the other at the Majjistral Natural History Park.

At the Cliffs of Our Lady there is the principal colony of this seabird in Malta, with around 500 pairs of Yelkouan Shearwaters located at these cliffs. At the Majjistral Park there are another 250 pairs.
