Authorities in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, are encouraging their citizens to desist from eating dogs and cats as the tradition is undermining the country’s reputation.
The Vietnamese authorities are also concerned about the risk of disease that the dogs carry with them.
In Hanoi, there are some 1,000 shops that sell dog and cat meat as food.
The authorities are appealing for the end of the tradition as many of the animals are being killed in a cruel way.
There are an estimated 490,000 dogs and cats in the city, with the majority being domestic animals.
