UPDATE (2): Student’s grandmother who assaulted School Head to be arraigned tomorrow

The Vittoriosa Primary School Head at the Santa Margerita college was given treatment after she was allegedly assaulted by a student’s relative.

The Police told TVM that the case occurred at around 10.30 am at the school in Triq San Dwardu, and that they were informed of the incident by the health authorities.

The Education Ministry confirmed in a statement the incident and said that the woman had gone to the school and identified herself as the grandmother of a student, while requesting a meeting with the school’s head.

The woman was therefore permitted to go to the office where there were the Head and Assistant Head of School. The statement said that the woman physically assaulted the Head and members of the staff immediately gave assistance and the person was taken out of the school.

The Ministry added that a report was also lodged with the Police who started investigating the case. The Ministry deplored the assault and requested the authorities concerned to take all the actions according to law.

TVM is informed that the student’s grandmother has been arrested and is to be arraigned tomorrow, Wednesday.

The Teachers’ Union (MUT) stated it will not accept this type of aggression and insists on immediate investigations by the Police and education authorities in order to take all the necessary steps on the case. The Union reiterated the need of security measures in every school.

MUT in a statement condemned the aggression on the School’s Head by a relative of a student during her duties, saying the assault lead to her admission in hospital. Contacted by TVM, the education authorities however denied that the head of school was admitted in hospital and added that she was treated by a doctor at a government clinic.

Meanwhile the Union of Professional Educators Voice of the Workers (UPE) also condemned the assault and said that this was the second incident in a few months.
