Most of the trees in Mizieb ended up being totally destroyed in the wake of yesterday’s fire which spread throughout the area.
As this video footage shows, the reserve sustained major damage despite the continuous fire-fighting efforts by Civil Protection Department firemen, members of St John’s Rescue and volunteers from the Mizieb Reserve Hunters’ Group.
Scenes captured by the St John Rescue Corps yesterday show close-ups of the fierceness of the fires as well as the efforts of those involved in trying to control and extinguish the flames.
Meanwhile, Government declared in a statement that it had requested the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) to carry out an exercise to assess the damage caused by the fires which engulfed the Mizieb area yesterday. This should also lead to identification of a plan for the area to be regenerated in the best way possible, and through interventions which would have the least impact on the ecology.
Environment, Sustainable Development and Climate Change Minister Jose’ Herrera stated that whilst it is not known at this stage what could have caused the fires, it would be prudent at this point that in general terms the public should exercise extreme caution by not discarding waste in these types of localities, whilst totally avoiding the use of fires.
