Two children are growing up in the company of an emu, an animal which one does not usually find as a pet in Maltese and Gozitan homes.
TVM spoke with the children’s father, Arnold Sciberras who is an environmentalist and well versed in animal husbandry. He said that, together with his children, he carried out a research to inquire whether it is true that these huge birds are intelligent as many research show.
Sciberras stated that the emu, named Blue, has become a part of the family and his very friendly with the children. The female bird is only five months old and continuously enjoys playing with the children.
The environmentalist told TVM that the children have studied the history of dinosaurus and birds are their closest animals, which the Sciberras family is fond of. The children have in fact named the emu for the velociraptor, which appears in the film Jurassic Park which, similar to the emu, has contacts with humans and obeys its owner.
In the video, the children are seen playing and racing with the emu in the Marsa Junction road, which is closed to traffic due to construction works. Obviously, due to its speed, the emu won the race.
The emu, better known as Dromaius novaehollandiae in the science world, is the second largest bird, after the Ostrich, and is capable of reaching a height of up to two metres. It lives in Australia and was considered in the past as an anti-farming bird.
