WATCH: Bridge linking Genoa to Florence collapses

A bridge which serves as a busy link road in the North of Italy has collapsed, but only two drivers were trapped in the debris because of the lockdown imposed on the whole country to limit the spread of the coronavirus, which has practically stopped all traffic movement.

A spokesman for the Civil Protection Department said the 260-metre bridge close to the town of Aulla, midway between Genoa and Florence in the Tuscany region, collapsed at about 10.25 a.m.

Civil Protection Department personnel rushed to the scene, and the two trapped drivers were taken to hospital, where they were certified to have suffered minor injuries.

In August 2018 43 persons had died when a roadway had collapsed in Genoa.
