WATCH: Bruce Grobelaar visits Liverpool Supporters Club in Gozo

He will always be remembered for the 1984 European Cup finalissima. It had ended in a penalty shoot-out and the protagonist had been Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobelaar. Victory at the Stadio Olimpico went to the Reds, and Grobelaar earned a new nickname from that day on – Spaghetti Legs – after his excellent performance between the posts in the shoot-out. Grobelaar continued to follow Liverpool even after he ended his career. Even today, he is still one of their most fervent supporters. Two years ago he promised the Liverpool Supporters Club in Gozo he would visit them at the end of the season when Liverpool were crowned champions of the English League.

The atmosphere at the Supporters’ Club in Xewkija is always on a ‘high’, both when Liverpool are playing and now even more so after they won the Premier League. The club has been open for 23 years, and it boasts what is probably a unique collection of cups won by this prestigious team. For Grobelaar, who has won practically every honour with Liverpool, this year Jurgen Klopp’s squad rose to the occasion, and this despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

“When the organization started gearing up, Liverpool started finding the right players. We bought Allison. We bought Van Dijk and the players around them started playing better. That was the time when I knew that we were going to lift that trophy.”

Grobelaar, who was born in Zimbabwe, had defended the goalposts for the Kopites, as Liverpool are known, for 13 years between 1981 and 1994.

“I was lucky to play with the best team in Europe at the time. And I never thought that we had to wait 30 years to lift the trophy. But now that it happened, the players need to settle down. They’ve got to take that into themselves and I know that Jurgen Klopp is going to say to them ‘You’ve won this year, but nothing from next season. Next season we start again’ “.

Supporters of the Liverpool FC Gozitan club in Xewkija also had the opportunity for a photo with yet another cup in their collection – an identical replica of the English championship trophy.
