WATCH: Chicks hatch in project to increase barn owl population in the wild
A project being carried out by the Federation of Hunters, Trappers and Conservationists is aimed at increasing breeding by barn owls in the wild.
The barn owl is a bird of prey which has become popular as a domestic animal, but its numbers have decreased drastically in the wild.
Two pairs of barn owls are involved in the FKNK project at the tal-Bagħal farm in Buskett, and one pair has already hatched its young (see video).
In four weeks’ time the barn owls will be placed in another aviary which will allow them to fly around in their natural habitat, whilst continuing to be fed. Three aviaries are being used, one of which is intended to get the barn owls used to living in the wild.
The public will be able to view these barn owls in the aviaries through cameras which provide direct transmission.
