WATCH: Popeye and Catherine cured, released at Ġnejna

Turtles Popeye and Catherine today made a short trip at Gnejna Bay to return to their natural environment, after being treated and cured at Fort St Lucian.

Popeye, who is about five years old, was given his name after being found injured close to Popeye Village in March. The turtle had been entangled in fishing nets, and also had a lung infection as a result of having swallowed some plastic.

Catherine is 13 years old, and was found in a very bad state in November close to Armier, also as a result of having got entangled in fishing tackle. Just like Popeye, she was suffering from a lung infection as a result of swplasticg plactic, but even worse in her case, she had not been eating and was in a weak state.

Catherine also had a cured wound after being hit by some sea craft, but the incident had left her maimed. After eight months of treatment, Catherine has finally been restored to full health, and was released at Gbejna today together with Popeye.
