WATCH: President Emeritus stresses how important it is for children to read

Over the last few days, the third edition of the National Reading Marathon was launched in primary school around Malta.

This initiative is organised by the Malta Trust Foundation and the National Literacy Agency, and is taking place with the aim of encouraging children to read more.

Invited as a guest on TVAM, the Chairperson of the Malta Trust Foundation, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, drew attention to the fact that in our country we have a number of children who are early school leavers.

The President Emeritus explained that this problem should be tackled by first of all getting children to enjoy reading, and making them aware of the benefits which a book brings with it.

She said that reading keeps you motivated, opens many doors and is a stimulus for a person’s brain and their development.

Apart from this,  the Reading Marathon is also organised with the aim of collecting some funds for children who are in need. In the first two editions, 250,000 Euro were collected.
