WATCH: Rare scene in Sahara desert

The Sahara desert has been covered with snow after temperatures plummeted to -3C overnight.

This rare scene occurred in Ain Sefra, Algeria where the snow created an elaborate design in the sand.

The Sahara desert which covers a large part of North Africa has been experiencing climate change over the last hundreds of years, however the appearance of ice or snow in this area is still a very rare occurrence.

Ain Sefra is known as the beginning of the desert and is around 1,000m above sea level and is surrounded by the Atlas Mountains.

January is always one of the coldest months with average temperatures of 14C while the summer months see temperatures rising to 38C.
