WATCH: Suspect held under arrest after pleading not guilty to killing his mother and sister in Għaxaq
Joseph Bonnici, 38, the main suspect in the double murder in Ghaxaq pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned in Court last night.
He has been charged with murdering his mother, Maria Lourdes Bonnici, 70, and his sister, Angele Bonnici, 29, after he was brought to Court at 7pm last night through the back door, escorted by the Police.
Bonnici was also charged with hiding the bodies, of possessing a firearm without a licence, of firing gunshots in a residential area and of filing a false police report.
Appearing in front of Magistrate Rachel Montebello, the Prosecution led by Inspectors Keith Arnaud and John Spiteri from the Homicide squad and Inspector Roderick Attard from the Zejtun police station, said that on Wednesday the Police began investigating the case of two people who had been reported missing.
They were speaking to the accused to see what information he could give them about the women’s disappearance, but when the investigation started going into more details, there were inconsistencies in what the man was telling them and the Police began to suspect that the alleged victims were dead.
Inspector Spiteri added that the accused then told them that his mother and sister were dead and that he had killed them, and it was he who took the Police to the location where he had buried them.
Magistrate Montebello said that because of the seriousness of the charges brought against him, the accused will remain under preventive arrest at the Corradino Correctional Facility.
Dr Franco Debono and Dr Marion Camilleri appeared for Joseph Bonnici and did not ask for bail.
The victims were found early on Saturday morning after a police search. The women, who had been shot, were found buried in the soil between a small room and a rubble wall in the area of Santu Kristu in Għaxaq itself. From police investigations, it does not appear that the victims were killed on the scene but had been taken there using a cart.
