WATCH: Symbolic message by football players prior to Raiders Għargħur vs Mosta match

Shortly before the game Raiders Għargħur vs Mosta, a strong symbolic message was displayed at the Mgarr football ground. This came in the light of what happened over the weekend when Maya Lucia was allegedly the target of racist comments during an under -19 championship match between the two teams at Marsascala football ground. Some people outside of the ground allegedly starting calling her names because of her father and the colour of her skin.

This symbolic gesture involved the players taking a knee before the game and wearing T-shirts with the word ‘respect’ in a strong message against racism which should not be part of the game of football.

Before the match, the President of the Football Association, Bjorn Vassallo spoke with Maya. In his comments to TVM, Bjorn Vassallo said they wished to send the message that the national team represents the Maltese flag and is made up of different players, of different races, religions and beliefs. He stressed that discrimination should not exist in sports.

Meanwhile, TVM also spoke with a sports psychologist who said that psychological bullying and racist comments are pushing young athletes away from sports.
