The installment of a new Archpriest in Żebbuġ Gozo attracted more attention than other previous celebrations which were uploaded on the social media.
An investigation carried out by TVM showed that the unusual ceremony with which Archpriest Canon Ġwann Sultana was welcomed by parishioners is a Gozitan tradition which goes back to scores of years.
A spokesperson for the Gozitan Curia told TVM that it is something natural that village residents welcome in their locality a new archpriest or parish priest in this way before he is installed.
He said that the entrance of an archpriest in a car in the locality and pulled by a rope is an old tradition. It is the prerogative of the parish whether this ceremony is held or not, however it is not intended as an exhibitionist display.
Asked by TVM if any guidelines will be issued, the Gozitan Curia spokesperson did not exclude that this possibility is explored in the future.
These are the photos uploaded on social sites by the Żebbuġ parish, at the same time that a video of the unusual arrival of the new Archpriest was also uploaded. The photos and video were met with mixed reactions on social sites.
The Gozitan Curia spokesperson told TVM that each parish follows a liturgy writ for the installment ceremony in the Church and does not interfere in outside celebrations.
The new Archpriest was born in Xagħra Gozo in 1971 and ordained priest in 1996. He started his pastoral work in the Santa Lucia parish in Rome and studied at the Salesian Universita Pontificia.
In 1998 he carried out pastoral work at Sant’Anton Abbati church in Xagħra and was appointed Canon of the Marija Bambina Colleggiate in Xagħra in 2000.
Canon Ġwann Sultana was appointed by Gozo bishop Mario Grech following the resignation of Can. Reuben Micallef as archpriest of the ‘Marija Mtella’ s-Sema’ parish in Żebbuġ.
On the 4th November, parishioners participated a Thanksgiving Mass for Archpriest Reuben Micallef.
