WATCH: Turtle rescued from plastic at Għajn Tuffieħa

A group of friends who were canoeing on Monday came across a turtle which was trapped.

They were paddling around 300 metres away from shore when they noticed a turtle with plastic wrapped around its neck. They immediately took the turtle on board, and paddled quickly back towards the beach.

In a video which they sent to, the group can be seen cutting off the plastic from around the turtle’s neck. Shortly afterwards they let it go free once again into the sea.

In comments he gave to this website, Walter Oscar Riviera, who works as a lifeguard here in Malta, has appealed to the public not to litter,  especially when it comes to plastic items as they are detrimental both to the environment and to marine life.
