Watch: “We cannot breathe properly” – children protest against mask wearing in class

A number of children carrying slogans gathered in Merchant Street, Valletta to protest against the wearing of mask in class.

Their slogans included messages that the pandemic does not place children at risk, while others said that if they have to spend days at school wearing the mask, they will not be able to breathe well.

Recently, updated protocols were announced for the new scholastic year. Education Minister Justyne Caruana told a press conference that the health authorities recommend that students and teachers have to wear the mask all the time, except when they are eating or doing physical exercise. It was also announced that only kindergarten children may not wear the mask while they are in their bubble.

State schools are ready to welcome their staff from Monday and students from Wednesday according to health authorities’ protocols.  The education authorities said that 85% of students aged 16 and over and 73% of students between 12 and 15 years of age are vaccinated against Covid-19.  However, as a prevention, social distancing will be observed between students and also between students and teachers, as announced earlier this month.
