Yachting enthusiasts today are eagerly waiting for the race which is annually organised in Malta with great preparations.
Today is the start of the 40th edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race with the participation of 113 yachts which will sail from the Grand Harbour for a 600 mile race.
The race has its origin from the rivalry between the members of the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) – Alan Green and Jimmy White – two Britons who lived in Malta, and the Maltese members of the Royal Malta Yacht Club – Paul and John Ripard.
The two clubs had proposed to the RMYC committee a long route for the races that start and end up in Malta in autumn time.
The yaching race has been held in Malta since 1968, with its first winner was one of its founders, John Ripard, who in this video footage is seen receiving the first trophy by Mr Anthony Miceli Farrugia.
The Rolex Middle Sea race is being transmitted live on TVM.
