Waterpolo marathon at Neptunes pool in aid of Special Olympics athletes

Following the success at the Special Olympics, during which Maltese athletes won 40 medals at the world games in March, Marigold Foundation continued with its work to provide sport opportunities to athletes with intellectual disability. A 24-hr waterpolo marathon is being held at the Neptunes pool in St Julian’s with the participation of some 400 athletes.

Gilmour Borg and Ann Ebejer were among the first athletes of the Special Olympics to participate in the event and although their specialty is athletics, they are giving their best in waterpolo.

Special Olympics Malta director, Anna Calleja, said that the money raised from the event to support athletes with intellectual disability is just one of the aims of the marathon. “We do not look only at fund raising, but that our athletes are given an opportunity in an inclusive environment”.

The marathon, held on the initiative of Timmy Camilleri who is a father of a Special Olympic athlete, continues till Sunday afternoon.
