“We are not criminals. We want freedom” – Protest by migrants at Ħal Safi
A big group of migrants held at the Ħal Safi Detention Centre are protesting against being kept locked up.
The protest started at about 11.00 a.m., when the migrants started shouting, with some of them climbing onto containers and hanging pieces of cardboard and sheets with messages calling for freedom and that they are not criminals.
The Detention Service called for assistance, and reinforcements from the District Police, the Rapid Intervention Unit and the Special intervention Unit went to the scene. Also present are Civil Protection Department fire-fighting vehicles.
One of the messages indicates that some of the migrants have been in detention for 132 days.
The situation appears to be under control so far.
