What ‘flatten the curve’ essentially means

In social media footage, Dr Melanie Zammit Burg gives a detailed explanation of the oft-repeated phrase ‘flattening the curve’.

She explained that since there isn’t yet a vaccine it is important that people are infected slowly so as not to put excessive pressure on the country’s healthcare. This obviously means that in lieu of the virus hitting the country and disappearing quickly, it will remain in our midst for longer.
