Which organs are the Maltese ready to donate?

From 2016 to date, 19,639 people have registered to be in the National Registry of Organ Donation and Human Tissues.

The majority are aged between 26 and 40 and these account for 6,654. A further 6,264 are between 41 and 60.

3,889 people are between the ages of 16 and 25, while 2,728 are between 61 and 80. 104 people on the Register are over 81.

This information was provided by Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Chris Fearne in answer to a parliamentary question tabled by Nationalist MP Karol Aquilina.

From the statistics given to Parliament, it appears that more women than men have expressed the wish to give their kidneys, liver, small intestines, lungs, pancreas, heart, cartilage, ligaments, bone tissue, cornea, heart valves and tendons, as can be seen in the following table.

In a separate reply, Dr Fearne said that 7 persons withdrew their registration while 6 others did not want to be organ donors.
