WHO classifies Indian variant as a global concern

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the Covid variant found last year in India as a global concern.

Preliminary studies have shown that the mutation of the variant, referred to as B.1.617, spreads faster than other variants. In the meantime, further scientific studies are expected on this variant.

The WHO states that the Indian variant has already spread to more than 30 countries. Three other variants emerging from the UK, South Africa and Brazil have also been declared as global concerns.

Scientists are studying the Indian variant to determine if it is responsible for the wave of deaths taking place in India.
