Wife of man who killed 49 people at gay club in Florida has been arrested
The wife of Omar Mateen, who last year killed 49 people at a gay club in Florida, has been arrested in San Francisco.
It is believed that Noor Salman helped her husband carry out the attack which took place on 12 June, and she will be extradited to Florida to answer to charges in this state. She was already interrogated by the police shortly after the attack, during which she had stated that her husband had become radicalized about a year before.
Omar Mateen, 29, was shot and killed by police after the three-hour attack, which apart from 49 victims, also left 53 people injured. He had said that he was carrying out the attack in the name of the Islamic State.
The FBI had already spoken to Mateen twice in 2013, after he was reported to have told a colleague that he has ties with the IS, however no evidence was found.
Mateen’s father said his son had become angry at seeing two men kissing in Miami. From investigations it appears that Mateen used to go regularly to the club which he later attacked and was also in contact with gay men on dating apps.
This led the investigators to suspect that he could have been frustrated because his sexuality was in conflict with his fundamental beliefs.
