Will George Vella be the next President after Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca?

Everything indicates that if he accepts, Dr George Vella who in the last legislature was Foreign Affairs Minister, will be nominated for the office of President of the Republic. President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca’s five year term ends in the beginning of April.

Dr Vella did not contest the last general election. Known for his interest in foreign policy, even after he ended his ministerial post, he was nominated by the Commonwealth to serve in the organisation’s experts committee.

Dr Vella contested his first election in 1976 and served in Parliament between 1978 and 2017. He was also deputy leader of the Labour Party. In April, Dr Vella – who is married to Miriam and has three children -will be 77 years old.
