UPDATED: Man arrested in connection with the aggression of a couple at Xagħra

A 55-year-old woman sustained grievous injuries after she and her 58-year-old husband were assaulted in the early hours of this morning.

TVM is informed that at about 4.00 a.m. the couple, both British nationals, were returning to their apartment in Xagħra, when they were attacked and assaulted with a stone.

It appears that the couple tried to fight off the aggressors, until one of them grabbed the woman and started bashing her head against a car. The aggressors then fled the scene, taking some gold items which they stole from the woman.

An ambulance was summoned to the scene and transferred the woman to Gozo General Hospital, where she was certified to be in a grievous condition. The man sustained slight injuries.

Police investigations are ongoing, and an Inquiry into the incident has been opened by Magistrate Paul Coppini.

In a development later in the day Police stated that a 29-year-old foreigner was being held by them to help with investigations.
