UPDATED: Worker loses his life after he was trapped between high-up and Ħal Kirkop tunnel ceiling
A worker died tragically early today during maintenance work under the Ħal Kirkop tunnels.
The victim is 57-year old Mario Vella from Ħaż-Żebbuġ. The Police said that the worker was in the box of a high-up doing cleaning work on the tunnel ceiling when, for some reason, he was trapped between the tunnel’s cieling and the high-up.
Television Malta is informed that the high-up was being operated by the same worker who was alone at the time of the accident, while other workers were in another part of the tunnel making preparation works for its re-opening to traffic. They were about to conclude the works after a night’s duty.
This is one of the tunnels in which extensive maintenance works are being done by Infrastructure Malta with an investment of €10 million. Most of the work is being done during the night to avoid traffic congestion.
Members of the Civil Protection and a Mater Dei medical team arrived on site. The man was certified dead on the spot.
An inquiry is underway by Magistrate Nadine Lia, while district police officers are leading investigations.
In October of 34 years ago, three workers died with an electric shock while doing maintenance work outside the Ħal Kirkop tunnel.
