UPDATED: Accused says he torched Police officer’s car by mistake – remanded in custody

21-year-old Denilson Manicaro of Paola has been remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to charges of torching a car in Bishop Thomas Gargallo, Ħal Tarxien on 31 December at about 2.00 a.m.

When he was arraigned under arrest before Magistrate Neville Camilleri, Manicaro likewise did not admit to being in possession of drugs which were not for his exclusive use.

Inspectors Mario Sciberras, Jeffrey Scicluna and Paul Camilleri for the Prosecution stated that an inquiry had been carried out into this case, and accused had been caught on security camera footage. The Inspectors added that during the investigation the Police found 31 sachets, including cocaine, in the accused’s car.

The Prosecution stated that Manicaro admitted to torching a Toyota Vitz car, whose owner is a Police officer, but had told them he had made a mistake as he had wanted to torch someone else’s car, whose identity he did not reveal to the Police.

Defence lawyers Franco Debono and Amadeus Cachia requested bail as accused has a clean conduct sheet and had cooperated with the Police, further stating that the inquiry into the case has been concluded.

The Prosecution objected, pointing out that a third party can end up a victim of the accused, who had said he wanted to burn someone else’s car, and besides, as investigations are still ongoing, evidence could be tampered with.
