A 26-year-old Dutchman sustained serious injuries in a collision which occurred during Sunday-Monday night. The accident took place in Triq is-Salini, limits of Naxxar, shortly after 1.00 a.m. From on-site information available to TVM, it results that the Dutch national was a front-seat passenger in a car which was being driven by a 23-year-old female from Rabat, Gozo.
The Police are investigating the dynamics of the accident,which took place between the Bugibba traffic lights and the roundabout which leads to the road known as it-Telgħa ta’ Alla u Ommu, in order to establish how the vehicle being driven by the female ended up in a head-on collision with a taxi in the lane along which the taxi was proceeding.
At the time of the accident the taxi, which was being driven by a 25-year-old man from Marsascala and with a 28-year-old female passenger from Swieqi, was proceeding in the direction of Bugibba. At one point the driver was startled by the headlights of a car which he suddenly saw proceeding towards him and tried to move to the side, but the cars impacted head-on.
Both vehicles sustained extensive damages on impact, with the foreigner who was a passenger in the female driver’s car being trapped inside. Civil Protection personnel were summoned to assist the foreigner out of the vehicle, and a medical emergency team rendered assistance. The four persons involved in the collision were all taken to Mater Dei hospital by ambulances.
At the hospital the Dutch national was certified to be in danger of dying, whilst the taxi driver and his passenger were certified to have sustained slight injuries. Police stated that the condition of the Gozitan female is not yet known.
An inquiry into the accident was opened by Magistrate Anthony Vella, who appointed a number of experts to assist. The road was closed off for nearly three hours until District Police carried out their investigations.
