Young man remanded in custody over charges of sexual activity with a minor
A 22-year-old man was remanded in custody after being brought to court on charges of engaging in sexual intercourse with a minor and corrupting her. He pleaded not guilty.
Inspector Sarah Zerafa explained how the alleged victim, accompanied by her parents, made a report shortly after the alleged case took place. He explained how the two started talking on messenger, with the accused inviting the girl to meet him.
The girl was examined at Mater Dei Hospital and an investigation into this case is ongoing.
The defense asked for bail with the parte civile lawyer and the prosecution objecting to this for fear of contamination of evidence because the girl, who is a minor, is the main witness in the case.
The defense pointed out that the young man, who is unemployed, suffers from depression and is being monitored by professionals.
He was also accused of failing to comply with Court imposed conditions handed down by another Court on a pending case over a fight between neighbors.
Magistrate Charmaine Galea denied the request for release from custody and requested that the accused be monitored because of his condition. A protection order was also issued in favour of the victim and her family.
