In Court, 23-year old Dominic Agius from Cospicua was sentenced to four years in prison after admitting that on Saturday night he punched a woman after attempting to steal her handbag in Birkirkara.
Inspectors Kurt Zahra and Roderick Spiteri accused Agius, who is unemployed, of aggravated theft with violence, and of being a relapser. They said that on Saturday at 10.00 pm they were informed that a number of people were holding a man in Valley Road, Birkirkara after he tried to steal a woman’s handbag. On arrival at the site, the police found a Romanian female youth who told them she was assaulted and robbed, while a number of persons were holding Agius from escaping. Inspector Zahra said the accused held the woman on the ground and punched her in the face before taking her handbag. However, she stood up and ran after the thief while shouting at people to stop him.
Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras told the accused that if he admits charges he will be sent to prison, but he replied that he had already admitted. The court sentenced him to four years imprisonment.
