Johann Scicluna was on Friday afternoon offically announced as new coach of Qormi FC.
In a new conference, Club President Jesmond Aquilina said that after 8 years in the top division, the club wants to start a new era and is planning to focus on the development of young talents coming out of the Nursery.
He is convinced that this new strategy for the club will help to gain back the lost faith of loyal Qormi supporters who have abandoned the club in the past few months.
Club products like captain Alessio Cassar, Andreas Vella, Steve Agius and Gilmour Azzopardi are playing regularly, and it is the priority for Qormi to continue to intrioduce more young players in the first team squad as from this season.
With him in the technical staff, Johann Scicluna is joined by Franco Scicluna, Karl Farrugia and Matthew Psaila, as negotiations are still on going to convince experienced coach Jesmond Zammit to give a helping hand to the youthful technical staff, who may lacjk experience but are full of enthusiasm to fulfill their objective.
New coach Johann Scicluna is a former player with more than 200 appearances with the same club, he was also assistant coach with clubs like Sliema Wnaderers and Msida St Joseph, and recently he won a number of honours while coaching Birkirkara women’s team.
In the past few weeks Qormi had a number of problems, with financial difficulties leading to a number of exits from the club, with players like Matthew Farrugia, Jonathan Bondin, Duncan Pisani and Leighton Grech all leaving for new ventures.
Two weeks ago Qormi had to deal with the resignation of coach Jesmond Zerafa, but now the club is in good hands and aiming to progress for the rest of the season starting from tomorrow when they play Valletta at 5.15pm at Victor Tedesco Stadium in Hamrun.
