Record number of participants for the European Seismological Commission conference

The 36th General Assembly of the European Seismological Commission will take place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta between the 2nd and 7th September 2018.

This prestigious conference is being organised by the Department of Geosciences, University of Malta.  The Assembly takes place every two years. This year, a record number of participants – over 700 – will be taking part, mostly from Europe, but also from all other continents.

The General Assembly is primarily a meeting ground for academics and researchers working in the field of seismology (including Earth structure, earthquake mechanisms, seismicity, etc) and related applications, including applied and social aspects of seismology, such as earthquake hazard and risk, seismicity induced by anthropic activities, earthquake engineering, seismic safety, education and awareness, and risk prevention.

The opening ceremony will take place on Monday 3rd September at 9.30am at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta.  It will be addressed by the President of the Republic, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, through a video message, by the Minister for Home Affairs and National Security, Michael Farrugia, by the Rector of the University of Malta, Prof. Alfred Vella, and by officials of the ESC.
