Following the press conference on Saturday, the Maltese Eurovision hopefuls Firelight met with the Austrian singer Conchita Wurst who congratulated them for their excellent performance on stage of their Eurovision entry “Coming Home” and for the positive energy that surrounds them. Richard the frontman of Firelight, complimented Conchita not only for her beautiful performance on stage of “Rise Like a Phoenix”, but also for her effort to transmit a message of tolerance and acceptance of diversity.
Tom Neuwirth was born on November 6th, 1988, and he for the first time performed as his alter ego Conchita Wurst in 2011. Since then, he has been a symbol for tolerance and artistic freedom in Austria and beyond. His motto: “Be the best version of yourself rather than a bad copy of someone else! You can do whatever you want if you’re not hurting anyone”.
Firelight is a relatively new Maltese country folk pop band formed in June 2013. The driving force of Firelight is Richard Edwards. He’s the lead singer, author and composer, and plays the Appalachian mountain dulcimer, acoustic guitar, and percussion. He is joined in Firelight by his sister, Michelle Mifsud, on the piano, and brothers Wayne William and Daniel Micallef as backing vocalists on the guitar. Additional band members are Tony Polidano, on the upright bass, and Leslie Decesare on the drums and harmonica.
Firelight and Conchita will be taking the Eurovision stage in the second semi-final on Thursday 8th May with the hope to make it to the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday 10th May 2014.
