The delegations from every participating country yesterday arrived at the City Hall in order to attend the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest. The event was organized by the city authority Lord Mayor Frank Jensen, the host broadcaster DR and the EBU. Delegations arrived on the red carpet approximately every three minutes. Jon Ola Sand, the Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest was among the guests present at the event.
The 2013 Eurovision Song Contest winner, Emmelie De Forest was also present for the ceremony. During the live broadcast from the opening ceremony she said “I’m dealing with mixed feelings. It’s different this time as I don’t have to compete, I can relax and enjoy. Eurovision changed my life. Since we won in Sweden last year, I’m so busy with writing new songs for my second album”. During the Grand Final which will take place on Saturday 10th May, Emmelie de Forest will perform her new song called Rainmaker which she premiered in Malta during the Malta Eurovision Song Contest grand final last February. All the Eurovision artists will accompany Emmelie during her performance.
Firelight arrived at the venue at around 19:15 proudly waving the Maltese flag. Ulla Essendrop and Peter Falktoft were the commentators of the show at the entrance of the City Hall. Firelight was interviewed by the evening moderator host Abdel Aziz Mahmoud. The band members were asked if they felt nervous about the fact that they were going to open the second semi-final. Richard Edwards Micallef, the frontman of the band seemed very confident in his reply. He said “It’s great to get out there first and to show what you can. We will give it our best, that’s for sure. We are here to make our country proud. I think it is an honour and an advantage to open the largest music contest in the world”.
During the event Firelight met with all the other participants and held several promotional interviews for the relative broadcasting stations.
After the event, Firelight together with former Eurovision contestant Chiara held a concert called “The Malta Happy Hour” at Europhoria, Huset KBH Eurfan Café. Huset KBH is the oldest and largest culture house founded more than forty-three years ago. Firelight opened the show with a mash-up of several songs. Chiara followed with a number of songs from her own repertoire including Angel and The One That I Love. During this event, she launched a new song called Mermaid in Love. Firelight were called back on stage after Chiara and they closed the show with an encore of their Eurovision entry Coming Home. Needless to say, the crowd was ecstatic!
