The Tanzania registered ship Goldstar which was carrying 30 tonnes of drugs was on the way to Libya when it was consumed by flames. TVM is informed that the nine crew members currently in the Italian jails after being rescued from the wreck gave this information to the Italian authorities.
The ship was consumed by fire some 30 nautical miles off Malta. Late Sunday evening, the ship was berthed at Pozzallo, the base of the Guardia di Finanza. Fire-fighters continued with their work on board the Goldstar, wearing protective clothing and oxygen supplies, in an attempt to establish how much of the drug heist was left not burnt by the fire.
Seven of the nine crew said that they hailed from Syria and two from India. They will be arraigned before an Italian court.
