Mill-ilma li nefħet jidher li kienet kbira ħafna – Esperta tal-baleni

F’dan iż-żmien tas-sena, il-balena l-kbira, li hija t-tieni l-ikbar balena fid-dinja, sikwit tpassi madwar il-gżejjer Maltin, iżda hija rari li tintlemaħ mill-pubbliku, kif ġara fl-aħħar jiem f’Għawdex.

Telelvision Malta tkellem ma’ Dr Vanessa Pirotta, li hija xjentista tal-baleni Maltija fl-Università ta’ Macquarie f’Sydney l-Awstralja, dwar din il-balena enormi.

Dr Pirotta qalet li fil-Mediterran hawn popolazzjoni tal-balena l-kbira, li tpassi fi gruppi u anki individwalment, kif jidher li kien il-każ tal-aħħar jiem.

Ħoss qawwi li inħass iċaqlaq l-arja… hekk iddeskrivew ix-xena tal-balena l-kbira li tlemħet taħt l-irdum tas-Sanap fil-Munxar Għawdex fil-jiem li għaddew.

Il-Balena, li dehret tielgħa f’wiċċ il-baħar biex tieħu n-nifs, waqt li kienet qiegħda tpassi, qanqlet interess mhux biss fost dawk li rawha u ffilmjawha, iżda wkoll minn min ra l-filmati fuq il-media soċjali.

Dr Vanessa Pirotta qalet l-għoli tal-ilma meta ħadet in-nifs juri li l-balena kienet mdaqqsa sew. “What you can see is the whale taking a breath, and that blow is very tall and it is possibly 4 to 5 meters in height. So just from the small footage that we saw, it does appear to be a very large whale, probably making it’s way around Malta, passing through. It may or may not stick in the area in the next couple of days or we might never see it again.”

Dr Pirotta qalet li fil-Mediterran hawn popolazzjoni tal-balena l-kbira, li tpassi fi gruppi u anki individwalment, kif jidher li kien il-każ tal-aħħar jiem. “Fin whales can travel in a group however, they are often seen alone. When they are coming together to breed, they may be seen together, but not in this case it is most likely that the fin whale was passing through.”

Dwar kif għandu jaġixxi l-pubbliku jekk jilmaħ il-balena l-kbira meta jkun fuq il-baħar, Dr Pirotta qalet li minħabba d-daqs kbir tagħha, huwa importanti li l-balena tingħata l-ispazju. “It is important to give these whales lots of space, they are most likely to be scared of humans and the sounds of vessels can potentially deter them.”

Il-balena l-kbira hija meqjusa bħala speċi fil-periklu, kemm minħabba s-sajd eċċesiv kif ukoll it-tibdil fil-klima. Huwa stmat li madwar id-dinja hawn bejn 50 u 90 elf balena kbira.
