A new ferry connection to Sicily was inaugurated this weekend by Minister for Tourism Karmenu Vella. This will be operated by the Grimaldi Lines with a destination to the ports of Augusta and Salerno, three times a week.
Minister Vella said that this service is meant to complement other existing services which exist and will increase the connectivity. He said that last year, 45,000 passengers arrived in Malta from Sicily and these were mainly Italian and Sicilian residents. He said that the Malta-Sicily tourist niche is growing in importance particularly for short breaks.
The new ship, MV Audacia carries 500 passengers, up to 165 trailer and runs up to 25 knots per hour
