Mgr Mario Grech has been nominated as the president of the Maltese Episcopal conference. In an unprecedented appointment, The post was not taken up by the incumbernt, the Archbishop of Malta, as has traditionally been the case but has been assigned to the Bishop of the diocese of Gozo. Canon law directs that each Episcopal conference has to appoint a President and a Pro-President (deputy) as well as a general Secretary.
The Curia statement said the decision was taken in this morning’s session of the conference .
The members of the Episcopal Conference are Archbishop Paul Cremona, Archbisop Emeritus Guzeppi Mercieca, Auxiliary Bishop Charles Scicluna, Apostolic Nuncio Aldo Cavalli and Mgr Joe Magro
The appointment is for the next three years.
