Denmark beat Malta 6-0 in Copenhagen tonight but still did not make it to the play-offs for next summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil.
The Danes were already 2-0 up inside the first 10 minutes against a below-par Maltese side through goals by Rasmussen and an Agger penalty; and added two more before the break by Bjelland and another Agger penalty.
The other two goals came in the final 16 minutes: Rasmussen made it a personal double and substitute Nielsen got the sixth.
National team coach Pietro Ghedin said Denmark were just too strong for Malta on the day; but he would not put down his players, saying all eleven played well.
Denmark’s victory coupled with Bulgaria’s home defeat to the Czech Republic means the Danes finish second in Group B but they will not be going to Brazil as they finished the worst out of the nine group runners-up in the European qualifying zone.
